Lvl 63: How Epic Games were Lazy Geniuses in Fortnite's Marketing Campaign

Epic Games just turned being lazy and taking a break into one of the most genius marketing campaigns ever! Over the weekend, Season 10 of Fortnite came to a close. And ended with a huge galactic explosion! ...as an in-game event. Epic broke the fourth wall and brought the virtual world into reality by literally shutting down the servers and telling everyone: "This is The End. Thank you for playing." For a few days, no one could login and the website just had the thank you note on it. The End of course was the name of the season and quite cleverly they made it seem like the game was actually coming to an end...forever. It didn't, obviously. They have since then launched a brand new CHAPTER (2) and season, with a whole new world, shinning shimmering, spendid with over 13 new levels complete water mechinics including swimming and motor-boating. Now that's what I'm talking about! Time for some Lazy Island adventures on Fortnite! But anyway, these guys just wanted to take a few days off. Drink some beer, eat some pizza in the office, whatever. And they used their down time to build brand awareness! "We're done. It's over. THIS IS THE END" That is how it's done, folks! That is seriously some EPIC levels of Lazy genius right there. Hundreds of thousands of people tuned into their live stream. And what did they show? A looping gif of a black hole swirling. That's it. No announcements. No Behind the Scenes shit. Nothing. But they got people's attention. (A large audience of people I might add) ..and that's what matters! Attention ain't cheap. Look at the price of thirty seconds in the Super Bowl. That's millions of dollars! They got attention on a ZERO dollar budget though. People talked about Fortnite. Even non-gamers! When you get people talking about your brand, the marketing does itself. No work or money necessary. So they sat back and relaxed, waited a bit, until people came running back, ready to give them $8 million a day again. Now you may not be making anywhere close to that figure, but the take away here is to use curiosity, intrigue, and a bit of controversy to get people talking then let the marketing take care of itself. ...as you lay on down on your nice cozy couch.
